Farewell my grandmother

My beloved grandmother had her last breathed yesterday afternoon. It pain us very much saying goodbye to her. She still supposed to blow her 87 candles tomorrow, 13th, but she had called to spend her birthday at Almighty's God palace. My grandmother is a noble non license midwife to the people of Cagayan de Oro City. Rendering her service for 45 years. She was well known of her name "modesta or moding". Countless she has gave light to everyone's life. Among her grandchildren, I am one of her favorite. I lived in her house at a very young age 1 year old ( my parents house is just few steps away) and been apart when we transfered here in Cebu. It is still in my vivid memory the walks of 20-30 km beneath the sun once or twice a week for her patients weekly visit because she don't like riding any vehicle. And the boiled water almost spilled in my body because my aunt don't want me to go with nanay (thats how we love to call her) appointment due to the distance is quite far. No one could stop me to be with her even my parents. wherever she was i wanted to be always at her side. Sometimes if the demand of her work people would came to her house at dawn. She would wake me up to go and slept in the chair or wherever possible convenient place to sleep while waiting her. She can't live without me that time as I am also with her. Most of my cousins envied the attentions given to my grandmother. Nothing that I like was failed at my hand. Even at my age now, if I asked something to her she had not hesitant to give it to me no matter the cost.

One of the memorable moment she left us was her tale story. She had many tales about the mumu, the kapre, the demon, that frightened us silly but somehow, her presence made us feel safe. We never feared as long as nanay was there. At night I often slept beside her. I like the feeling her round, warm body while lying on her banig and inhaling her scent of Vick's Vapor Rub, Winter Green ointment and tabako. I somehow associated this strange olfactory combination with the love, caring and nurturing she generously showered on me every day. Snuggling up to her was a comfort for me young kid who feared the dark and the ghosts and demons she herself believed existed and love to tell us stories about. It was just great sitting with nanay listening to stories about her childhood, and her experiences during the war and her stalker to a "dili ingon nato".

Nanay is an indelible fixture of my childhood and teenage life and our family's life. We love her very much.

To nanay, Thank you very much for the memories you shared with us. You are now living the internal God's kingdom. We miss you...
